How to play Euchre
Euchre is the Midwest's favorite trick-taking game: a lightning-fast partnership battle over just five tricks, played with a 24-card deck where the humble jack rules everything. You and Ragnar face Anna and Sigríður; first team to 10 points wins.
- The bowers — the jack of trump (right bower) is the highest card; the same-color jack (left bower) is second and counts as trump.
- Bidding — order the upcard's suit up as trump, or after everyone passes, name your own. Whoever calls it must take 3 of 5 tricks.
- Scoring — 3-4 tricks: 1 point. All five (a march): 2. A lone march: 4. Get euchred and the defenders take 2.
- Going alone — bench your partner and play one against two for the big payout.
- Stick the dealer — if the second bidding round comes back around, the dealer must name a suit; no dead hands.
Strategy tips that win rubbers
- Count trump as three cards deep. With the right bower plus two more trump, order it up — most euchres come from timid passing, not bold calls.
- Remember the left bower changes suits. If hearts are trump, your jack of diamonds is a heart. Forgetting it is how renege-level blunders happen.
- Lead trump as the maker. Pull two of their trumps with one of yours and your off-suit aces come home.
- Don't trump your partner's ace. If your partner is winning the trick, save your trump for one that needs it.
- Go alone on the right hands. Both bowers plus the trump ace is the classic lone hand — 4 points swings a race to 10.
- Watch the dealer's pickup. The upcard tells everyone one card in the dealer's hand — play the count.

What are the basic rules of Euchre?

What are the right and left bowers?
The jack of the trump suit is the RIGHT bower — the highest card in the game. The jack of the other suit of the same color is the LEFT bower, the second-highest, and it counts as a trump card: if spades are trump, the jack of clubs is a spade for all purposes.
How does bidding work in Euchre?
A card is turned up beside the dealer. Starting left of the dealer, each player may order the dealer to pick it up (making its suit trump) or pass. If everyone passes, the card is turned down and each player may name any OTHER suit as trump. In this version the dealer is "stuck" and must choose if the second round comes all the way around.
What does going alone mean?
A player confident in their hand can declare trump and play without their partner, who sits the hand out. Win all five tricks alone and the team scores 4 points instead of 2 — the biggest swing in the game.
What does it mean to be euchred?
If the team that called trump fails to take three of the five tricks, they have been euchred and the defenders score 2 points. It is the risk behind every ambitious bid.
